About Calape

History & Heritage

The Municipality of Calape was formally established in 1802. Its name is historically linked to kalapi, a type of rattan once abundant in the area, implying that early inhabitants were likely involved in the gathering, processing, and trade of this valuable natural resource, widely used for furniture, baskets, and handicrafts. Alternatively, the name is also believed to signify a traditional gathering place for traders and fishermen.

A cornerstone of Calape's heritage is the San Vicente Ferrer Parish Church, an impressive 18th-century Gothic-inspired structure. Its construction commenced in 1933 and concluded in 1954, featuring distinct architectural elements such as lancet arches, rose windows, and spires. This venerable church was officially designated a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2023, underscoring its profound historical and cultural significance.
